Best Hotels In Haines, Alaska (There Aren’t That Many…)

Haines is a small town of about 1,600 people on the Southeast Alaskan mainland and is a popular tourist destination for many reasons.

Despite its small size, there are a ton of things to do in Haines including a wide variety of hiking trails, mountains, water, fishing, and hunting opportunities near the city making it a top destination for visitors who want to spend more time in the great outdoors.

It is also home to the famous Bald Eagle Festival every October. This coincides with the end of the salmon spawning cycle and hundreds of America’s national birds descend upon the city and the surrounding area.

Haines is also famous for its annual craft beer festival (often called “Beerfest”) in May and the Southeast Alaska State Fair in July.

The former Fort William H. Seward can also be found here. It was set up to train Alaskan recruits during the Second World War but was decommissioned shortly thereafter. Many of the original buildings remain intact and are now used for a variety of purposes.

Before we get into the list of hotels, here are a few things about Haines that you should know first:

  • Unlike most of Southeast Alaska, Haines is accessible by road. However, driving here from Skagway or the Alaskan Interior will require driving through Canada, as it is not connected to any other major cities strictly on the Alaska road system.
  • Haines has a small airport but it is only served by regional carriers like Alaska Seaplanes. These flights primarily originate in Juneau or Skagway, although connections from other parts of Southeast Alaska are possible.
  • Other than driving, the most popular ways to visit Haines are by cruise ship or by the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) of ferries. Cruise ships dock near the Fort Seward area and the AMHS terminal is just a few miles from town.
  • Rental vehicles are available from Avis, allowing visitors to make a one-way journey by driving from Haines and dropping off at another Avis location. There are also several local rental companies that do not offer alternate drop-off points.
  • If you search for “Haines Hotels”, there will inevitably be several listings for Skagway, claiming it’s only 20 miles away. These websites don’t know that getting from Haines to Skagway requires a minimum hour-long drive through Canada or a ferry ride!
  • The airport shuttle information for each property is correct as of the time of writing, although things are always subject to change in Haines and it’s recommended to check with the property before booking.
  • Many of these lodgings are only available during the tourist season, as Haines does not receive very many winter visitors.
  • At the time of writing, all accommodations listed here offer free WiFi service to guests, although that is also subject to change.
  • There are no taxis, Ubers, or Lyfts available in Haines. The Haines Shuttle service used to provide free transportation around town but is unfortunately no longer operating.
