Photos Of The Pacific Northwest – Nugget Falls

Nestled in the lush green rainforest of southeast Alaska lies one of nature’s most spectacular waterfalls, Nugget Falls. A breathtaking spectacle of cascading water and rainbow-colored mist, Nugget Falls is one of the most picturesque wonders of the Pacific Northwest.

If you’re a photographer, hiker, or traveler looking for a unique adventure to add to your bucket list, read on to learn more about this natural wonder and see some photographs from a recent trip I went on with several photographer friends.

Getting To Nugget Falls

Nugget Falls isn’t just easy on the eyes; it’s also easily accessible thanks to a short trail from Glacier Bay National Park.

I mean, you have to get to Alaska first of all but a cruise was always part of our plan.

Once you get there, the hike is around two miles round trip and relatively flat throughout.

The majority of the path winds through dense forest, so you may even spot some wildlife along the way. Keep an eye out for bald eagles soaring above or brown bears roaming nearby!

When you arrive at your destination, you’ll be treated to an unforgettable view. The waterfall stands at 140 feet tall; its thunderous roar echoing across the valley below.

From multiple viewing points along the trail, you can witness firsthand why this site was named one of Alaska’s top ten waterfalls by USA Today! No matter which angle you choose to capture this majestic view from, rest assured that no two photos will ever be alike—the light and mist change with every passing minute!

Here is a smattering of pictures that we took to get you inspired to plan your own trip before we move on to some tips on how you can make your pictures really pop.

The Trailhead View

The most accessible view of Nugget Falls is from the trailhead located just off Glacier Spur Road. Here, you can get up close and personal with the falls and take pictures from various angles as you make your way up the trail.

The surrounding foliage provides a lush background for your shots, making them even more stunning when viewed onscreen or in print. Plus, there’s plenty of room to move around so you can frame your picture however you’d like!

The Beach View

For an even more unique perspective, make your way down to nearby Auke Bay Beach where you can capture the waterfall from afar. This particular angle offers a sweeping view that showcases both the Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls in one shot—a truly remarkable sight that photography enthusiasts won’t want to miss out on! Plus, if you’re lucky enough, you might be able to capture a glimpse of bald eagles flying overhead while they hunt for fish in Auke Bay.

The Waterfall View

If getting up close and personal with nature is more your style then be sure to check out the top viewpoint at Nugget Falls itself. The water cascades over rocks and trees as it falls into Mendenhall Lake below, providing a truly breathtaking experience that only a few are privileged enough to witness firsthand! To get this shot just right, I’d recommend bringing along a wide-angle lens so you can capture as much of this natural beauty as possible.
